Text reads: this doesn't compare to the feel of your skin

Following this piece being featured as a Daily Deviation (massive honour, thank you) and it's subsequent popularity, I feel the need to tell the story behind it. This time last year I undertook a project entitled 'Being an Island' in which I denied myself physical human contact for the duration of 2 months, to better understand and appreciate touch and tactile communication, and to see the effect this had on me as an artist and person. This piece was one of the first pieces I made during that time, sadly I can't remember exactly when, maybe about a month in. It's a pretty accurate account of where my head was at that time, and basically sums up the whole project pretty concisely.
More in-depth documentation of the project can be found here: [link]

Daily Deviation

Suggester says: In a great visual poem, the medium is inseparable from the message. This piece engages the reader on a tactile level as well as a visual one, and is made even stronger thereby. night writing by ~kidahGEEK ( Suggested by HaveTales-WillTell and Featured by Nichrysalis )

I love the "Being an Island" project, it just seems so thoughtful and in-depth. It makes me wonder, even though I am already such a non-touchy person, if I went that long without contact how would I feel?
And this art is just... it's fascinating and wonderful to say the least. Braille is amazing

Thanks so much, and I couldn't agree more, I have such a fascination with Braille, I find the idea of a tactile language amazing, and it's such fun to work with. I started this project almost two years ago now but I still can't seem to stop working with it. It's a medium I think I will always use.

una mia riflessione in risposta a NIGHT WRITING by *kidahGEEK

il tuo “night writing” in italiano mi piace tradurlo “comunicare al buio”

- PROJECT: not everyone will understand the importance of a road even after the crossing.
- your "night writing" in Italian, I like to translate "talk in the dark"

Talk in the dark, I like that. It has the exact same feeling and connotations I feel this piece should have. Thank you =)

As a Braille teacher, I must say this definitely struck a nerve. I've learned the importance of human contact from my students. A simple touch on the shoulder or a hug makes all the difference :)

That's very cool that you teach Braille! I taught myself, and thus only know grade 1 currently, eventually want to progress to grade 2, but I imagine that'd be way more complex to learn on your own. Thanks for the comment =)

I've experienced that whenever I feel lonely and depressed I crave skin contact. Just the holding of a hand or a hug makes it so much better. I strongly believe that this is the reason why there are so much elderly people going lonely when they are single. Many of them do have social interaction enough, talking and so on. The elderly generation aren't much on physical contact with another, the holding of hands may be considered "inappropriate for their age". I've experienced Alzheimer patients who lost all sense of self or surroundings being greatly calmed by a touch of a hand and a slight squeeze. We are supposed to life in groups, and this need for bonding is natures way to help us survive. In modern day individuality seems to the trend, and perhaps therefore we also suffer from more depressions and loneliness.

I think your project is amazing from both an artist's standpoint as for a medical and social welfare standpoint. This piece makes a great statement.

I did a lot of research into stuff like this when I started the project, came across a thing known as 'skin hunger' which apparently many people suffer with these days. Either due to deliberate seclusion (particularly in today's society, where technology replaces actual human contact), and especially in the elderly, those in homes or who have outlived their partners. I found a really harrowing poem written by an old lady, who despite being respected and socialised with on a daily basis in the home yearned for contact and touch, seeing herself as no different to when she was young and needed such things. Nearly broke my heart.
Thank you so much for your comment, although that project is long finished (and graded, as it was down for uni) it's still very important/personal to me, I love hearing about other peoples similar experiences and their thoughts on what I did.

Sorry for all the spelling/grammar mistakes... It's really late at night for me, a time I shouldn't type down stuff, but is weirdly appropriate considering the title of this work.

Last year I spent a lot of time at a meditation centre where you were supposed to avoid physical contact and you would not believe how much I missed hugs and how much I needed them sometimes or their effect when I did get them.
This also seems extraordinarily romantic to me, possibly because my love's touch is something I've been crazy about since the beginning, and is still the thing I miss most when I'm away from him.
Thank you for your artwork - I am deeply touched by it.
A well deserved DD.

Oh wow, that sounds like a really interesting experience! And yeah, I know exactly what you mean, it's insane how isolated and detached you start to feel, how much you really just need a hug, or to be held, it's not a pleasant experience. And yes, this piece definitely came from a romantic place I know exactly what you mean with that one =)

Hmmmm.... I live a lifestyle of avoiding physical human contact. I can't remember the last time I touched someone intentionally and an accidental touch is followed by an apology. I guess for me, the equivalent of this project would be to intentionally touch someone at least once a day. *shudders* I think I'll pass....

However, the artwork is very nicely portrayed. You don't see Braille often in art and it couldn't have been used better! Very creative idea.

In doing the project I did a lot of research into touch and intimacy, and yeah, different people have different needs in regards to it. I've met people before who said the project was very similar to their daily life, and then others who couldn't imagine in a million years ever managing it. For me, it was very difficult as I'm very dependant upon tactile communication and physical touch, particularly as I was still sharing a bed at the time.
Thank you for your comment, very insightful =)
